What is happening in America?

August 6, 2010

Congressman Rangel has introduced a bill to make national service mandatory.  This act is not for a wartime draft but for two years of mandatory service by all Americans aged 18 to 42.  What kind of service?

Forms of National Service- The national service obligation under this title shall be performed either–

(1) as a member of an active or reserve component of the uniformed services; or

(2) in a civilian capacity that, as determined by the President, promotes the national defense, including national or community service and service related to homeland security.

Is he insane?  Is there support in Congress for this?  Are they seriously going to give the President the power to determine what service is required of ALMOST EVERY AMERICAN?  The description of the act implies that it would reinstate the draft for wartime but the actual act simply limits induction into the military during wartime.  Other national service would still be required at all other times.  Am I reading this wrong?

Thanks to Google and Wikipedia, I’ve just learned that this has been proposed before.  You’ll note in the Wikipedia article that the supporters of this idea tend to be older than 42 years.  The fact that Democrats are the sponsor of this nonsense makes me worry about what types of “service” they have in mind.  Can you imagine the uproar if President Bush had reinstated the draft for the War on Terror?

Too much government and no end in sight.

I knew this would happen at some time or another. I have been fuming for two years now since I found out from a friend that her high school children were REQUIRED to perform 80 hours of community service in order to graduate from High School. Let us not perform community service out of the kindness of our hearts but because it is required by your school board. It always starts at a local level and goes straight up to the state level and then the federal level.

One huge problem with compulsory community service in schools is the question of what qualifies and who gets to decide. I can almost guarantee that pet projects of liberal teachers WILL qualify and community service via a church WILL NOT.

Sounds about right. Her one daughter received two hours credit for working in the school office last week during school registration. Now tell me where that is community service! That is FREE labor not community service.
