That’s not very Christian of him.

July 7, 2010

George Gerkin seems quite pleased that Christopher Hitchens has esophageal cancer.  Really.  He thinks that God gave Hitchens cancer so that he would have the opportunity to realize the error of ways and decide to start believing in God.

As if.

Why would anyone choose to believe in a God who would use Cancer to increase his own popularity?

Do Christians really believe stuff like this?  What about other faiths?  If yes, can anyone explain why people who do believe in God also get cancer?

Hitchens has cancer because some cells in his esophagus mutated and the repair mechanisms were insufficient to correct the damage before the cells could start to multiply.  He might have had a genetic predisposition and he was probably exposed to a number of environmental triggers as well.  That’s why he has cancer.

Do you know what will cure his cancer?  Science.  Surgery and radiation and chemotherapy.  Not prayer.

Can you imagine Hitchens on his knees praying for God to cure his cancer?  Me neither.

I agree 100% with you, Gerkin is yet another example of a Christian acting the complete opposite of what they preach. I see no love or tolerance in his comments about Hitchens’ disease.

His disease is not the consequence of speaking against god, it’s the consequence of smoking several packs of cigarettes a day over the course of 40+ years.
