Forwarding e-mail is sometimes just too easy.

June 24, 2010

An e-mail is circulating claiming to be “passed along by police department and courthouse” which warns of gangmembers tricking drivers into stopping.  This is the one that I received tonight:

Please note:
1) There is a gang initiation reported by the local police department that gangs are placing a car seat by the road..with a fake baby in it….  waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the baby…
Note that the location of this car seat will usually be beside a  wooded or grassy (field) area …and the person – woman – will be dragged into the woods- beaten and raped- usuallyleft for dead.   DO NOT  STOP.  DIAL 9-1-1 AND INFORM THEM…..
2) IF YOU ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND EGGS ARE THROWN AT YOUR WINDSHIELD.
DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPER AND SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE  EGGS MIXED WITH WATER BECOME MILKY AND BLOCK YOUR VISION UP TO 92.5% SO YOU ARE FORCED TO STOP BESIDE THE ROAD AND BECOME A VICTIM OF ROBBERS.  THIS IS A NEW TECHNIQUE USED BY ROBBERS.

This is a complete HOAX.  It’s a newer version of an old urban legend.  The claim that the eggs can “block your vision up to 92.5%” completely gave it away to me.  92.5%?  Really?  That’s a bizarre number.

Please, if you receive an e-mail with any kind of warnings, check them out BEFORE you forward them to your entire mailing list.  Just go to Snopes.com.  Do this even if the warning has official logos attached and even if it comes from someone that you trust.  Don’t perpetuate these hoaxes.
