What kind of doctor are you?

May 19, 2010

Stop any person on the street and ask them what they think when they hear someone use the title “Doctor”.

What is that individual’s job?  The vast majority of people will assume that the person in question is a physician.  I make that assumption.  Don’t you?  It’s because of that assumption that some people use the title even when they aren’t a physician and even when they are not in their work environment.

Jim Heavens is a Republican candidate for Iowa State Treasurer.  On his website, he introduces himself as “Dr. Jim Heavens”.  Is he a doctor?  No.  He has a doctorate in agriculture.  So why use the title?  To attract votes because people will think “health care is a big issue this year and he’s a doctor so he might be a good candidate”.

So annoying.  Just introduce yourself by your name.
