Why don’t you stay home with your children?

May 15, 2010

I’m reading comments on USA Today about childcare experiences, both good and bad.  Sometimes I really don’t think that people listen to themselves.

Child care is absolutly the most stressing thing about being a working parent. Every country in the world has some sort of subsidized child care programs…except the USA…High quality child care is expensive and a 2 income household is mandatory…with one of those incomes going almost exclusively to child care…and good luck if you have 2 kids in daycare..  (Anonymous)

So, why work?  If one income goes almost exclusively to childcare, then two incomes are not mandatory.  By cutting a few expenditures, one parent could stay home which saves the childcare expense.

Is that just too logical?

Of course there are other expenses, but the writer clearly states that the second income is almost completely consumed by child care expenses.

That’s spot-on. It’s one thing if you’re making a ton of money, but for a lot of people – including me, twenty years ago, working costs as much as staying home and raising your own child. My husband got tired of me being exhausted and stressed and did some math.

I was making $40 a week. For a buck an hour, I decided to raise my own child instead of having the day care do it. When you include restaurant meals – ordering pizza for dinner when I was too tired to cook, etc. – and factor in miscellaneous expenses like pantyhose and work-related clothes and grooming, it was costing me money to work outside the home.

Some men and women actually want to get ahead in their careers and their lives and sitting at home all day raising children is not going to make them successful. Sometimes you have to sacrifice raising your kid to give them a better future. Some people actually have career goals and don’t just do things for money.

p.s. with your logic, why should anyone out there ever bother having children at all if it’s so expensive?

I’ll take you seriously when you can write a 15 page essay with at LEAST 10 sources. That way you’ll be brought up to a second year university student’s level. However, I doubt you’ll be able to write a critical analysis so I’d like to see you prove me wrong.

i know of daycares that charge less than 30 dollars daily for a child……if you are working full time, and daycare was eating your income you would only be making $3.75 an hour…..doesn’t add up
