Stars and Stripes Forever

May 6, 2010

I am stunned that a California high school (Live Oak HS) threatened to suspend students for wearing t-shirts and bandannas featuring the American flag.

School administrators called the images “incendiary” because it was Cinco de Mayo and the large Mexican student population was celebrating.  How can the American flag be incendiary in America?  I wear it in Canada and I’ve never encountered any negative reaction.

The Mexican-American students thought that it was “disrespectful.”  Seriously?  Aren’t they also American?  This is guilticulturalism taken to an extreme.  Disgusting.  At least the school district isn’t backing up the principal administration.  (The principal is Nick Boden but it was the Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez who sent the students home.)

If I were one of those students, I would probably wear an American flag every single day for the rest of the year.

I’m curious about this high school.  Do they have an American flag in every classroom?  Do they play the Star Spangled Banner each morning?  Do they say the Pledge of Allegiance?  If the Mexican-American students are so threatened by American flags, I suggest that they move back to Mexico.

Amen Michelle, I couldn’t have said it better.
