A Canadian woman is being held against her will in Saudi Arabia.

April 12, 2010

Nazia Quazi‘s father got her to visit him in Saudi Arabia for umrah.  He took all of her identification papers and she can’t leave Saudi Arabia without those papers and his permission.

She is a Canadian citizen who also holds an Indian passport.  She is not a Saudi citizen or even a Saudi resident.  She is CANADIAN.  You might think that the Canadian embassy would help her.  Wrong.

A subsequent e-mail to Quazi from Allen Ward, who was the consul at the Canadian Embassy at the time, states: “As we have said to you several times, you can come into the embassy any time, we are here to help. … I’m sure your father will not harm you, but, you need to think of things from your families (sic) side as well.”

Shouldn’t she be able to seek refuge in the embassy and then return to Canada without her father’s permission?  Can’t the embassy officials accomplish that much?

Add Saudi Arabia to your list of countries to avoid.
