Do you feel secure yet?

April 2, 2010

Update:  Wait a minute!  Is Canada doing this silly random screening rather than just screening people from the designated countries with terrorism ties?  Was I subjected to this just to avoid possibly offending someone?  Crap.

In travelling from Saskatoon to Tucson, we had to go to through secondary screening.  Have you had the pleasure of this experience?  After already passing through security, everyone travelling to the United States has to be screened again.  They seem to only screen about half of the travellers.  They look at your boarding pass and passport then search through ALL of your carry-on items.  Of course, as a mom, I had a ton of stuff.  One poor man was searched for at least five minutes.  I had to turn on my laptop and my camera but not the video camera.  Why?  Who knows.  After the screening, we were all crammed into a small area until we could be allowed up the boarding ramp.

Of course, this is all completely random so that no one can be accused of profiling or discrimination.  So stupid.  Completely wasted effort and completely inefficient.  Why screen my young daughter but not my husband?  Just silly.

I had high hopes that the new rules for screening announced today would improve this.  These hopes were quickly squashed.  The new rules are meant to improve the secondary screening which targeted travellers with passports from certain countries or people travelling through those countries.  You know … countries associated with terrorism.  Now, they are going to identify passengers for that secondary screening based on names, travel patterns, and descriptions of known terrorists but NOT religion or ethnicity or country.  This is so insanely stupid.  Just profile already!

I about threw up after reading that Obama and Napolitano dropped the screening from Muslim countries. What is the purpose of the security checks??? It’s not children, grandmothers, or people confined to wheelchairs that are blowing up aircraft. It’s the 17-30 year old male from Middle Eastern or North Africian countries that are doing it. What the Hell is going on anymore? In an effort to be politically correct, they are endangering the entire flying public. Outstanding.

    I’ll second that.

    Border Guard: Are you Muslim?

    Muslim: No.

Border Guard: Thank you. Carry on through, please.
