Holy hoops: I’m buying bread!

March 15, 2010

This religious hoop to jump through is for Jews.  Jews are not supposed to eat or profit from “chametz” (basically leavened grain products) during Passover.  Easy enough but what if you have a pantry full of partial boxes of cereal and a freezer full of bread?  What if you own a store which sells bread?  What if you haven’t quite finished that two-four of beer?

No problem.

You can sell all of your chametz to non-Jews before Passover and then buy it back after Passover. Rabbis can arrange it and you can do it online.  It gets better.  The non-Jew actually leases the storage space which holds the chametz and the Jews are not supposed to even open that cupboard or go in that room.

So … I’m buying crazybengal’s stash.  For some reason, I find that quite amusing.  Hmmm … what if I refuse to sell it back?

Then I KEEEL you! Oh wait. It’s just bread – keep it. Enjoy. But wait. We want the cereal…and the beer. If we don’t get the beer, I KEEEL you!
