Do pediatricians not have anything better to do?

February 22, 2010

The nanny state may be expanding.  Oh joy.

American Academy of Pediatrics wants hot dogs to be “redesigned” so that they aren’t a choking risk for children.  This is just stupid.  If it’s not a tube of meat then it’s  not a hot dog.  Do they basically want hot dogs banned?  What’s next?

I like the answer given by the president of the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council (I didn’t even know that a NHDSC existed!).  Janet Riley said “As a mother who has fed toddlers cylindrical foods like grapes, bananas, hot dogs and carrots, I ‘redesigned’ them in my kitchen by cutting them with a paring knife until my children were old enough to manage on their own”.

Is the AAP going to ask for redesigned carrots and grapes next?  Good luck with that one.

God forbid a parent take a little responsibility in this act! I think my kids have ate their body weight 2 times over in hot dogs and never once had a problem. Why???..because we cut them up prior to giving it to them. The government needs to quit trying to be the mother to the whole country.

Please don’t confuse the American Academy of Pediatrics as something that represents pediatricians, it doesn’t (as the Academy president pointed out clearly in 2007).
As a practicing pediatrician, I agree with your sentiments. Doesn’t the AAP have better things to do with its’ time, like promoting the care of asthmatics?
