Would you eat food from a trash bag?

February 19, 2010

Katy Wright does.  She calls it “freegan” and it’s a major part of her frugal lifestyle.  At first, I cringed at the thought but she has an excellent point.  Restaurants and stores throw out enormous amounts of still edible food.  The food might be past its “sell by” date but much of it is perfectly fine.

In one of her posts, she wonders why the businesses haven’t created some way to pass this food on to people who could use it.  I’m sure that much of it comes down to safety regulations but, if people are fully informed of the source of the food, then couldn’t it be up to them whether or not to purchase/accept it?  I won’t eat dairy products that are anywhere close to starting to go bad (I can tell!) but I have a friend who happily eats yogurt after it’s “best by” date.

Check out her blog.  It’s shocking what she finds in the trash.
