Parenting 101 as applied to terrorists.

December 3, 2009

Dick Smith, an Australian entrepreneur, provided the cash to pay the ransom to free hostages in Somalia (Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout and Australian photographer Nigel Brennan).  He was to be partially repaid by Lindhout’s family and those fundraising for her release.  (Or maybe not.)

Smith hasn’t been paid yet and wondered:

“I don’t understand that in all of Canada you can’t get someone who would donate that amount of money. That just seems quite extraordinary to me.”  (from The Globe and Mail)

I think that I can provide an answer for him.

If you reward bad behavior, they will keep doing it.

This is true for anyone.  Even kidnappers.  So, if you pay a ransom, the kidnappers will kidnap again in hopes of being paid again.

Maybe more people understand this than I would have guessed.
