There were pigs in Egypt?

September 29, 2009

Christopher Hitchens has a great column in Slate about the effect of the mass slaughter of swine in Egypt.  All pigs were ordered to be killed in Egypt to prevent swine flu.  Seriously.

I would have never guessed that there even were pigs in Egypt but apparently Christian garbage collectors keep the pigs and the pigs do a very important job.  They eat the garbage.  Or they ate the garbage because now there are no pigs.

Now Cairo is filling up with rotting garbage.  The law of unintended consequences.  Ain’t it grand?

Actually, the swine flu argument may have just been a ruse to get rid the Muslim country of pigs and perhaps even the Christian garbage collectors themselves.

(Thanks to Sandmonkey for pointing the way to the Hitchens article.)
