Sweet Health Headline Hyperbole

September 18, 2009

Crazybengal sent me an article claiming that artificial sweeteners make people GAIN weight.  That’s craziness.  Study after study has shown that artificial sweeteners don’t affect appetite and don’t make people gain weight.

Where did this claim come from?  One guess. Researcher Soraya Shirazi-Beechey did a MOUSE study.  Yep.  It’s those damn mice again.  She found feeding artificial sweeteners to mice turns on the sugar absorption in the intestine.  Of course, if you haven’t eaten any sugar then there is nothing to absorb and if you have eaten sugar then that sugar would have turned on the receptors anyway.

Hmmmm.  I wonder how the reporter at the Daily Mail heard about this obscure little mouse study?  Maybe the researcher contacted her and offered the interview?  Why would she do that?

Maybe because she has a patent on using the results of the study to create a weight loss therapy?
