Health Headline Hyperbole Returns!

September 15, 2009

This headline is complete crap:

Ice-cream can control your brain: Study

Once again, we’re being told some “truth” about human health based on a rodent experiment.  Plus, an inanimate object can’t control your brain; a substance can cause reactions which ultimately cause something to happen in the brain but using the word “control” is stupid.

Most importantly, the conclusion given in the article is wrong.

“What we’ve shown in this study is that someone’s entire brain chemistry can change in a very short period of time. Our findings suggest that when you eat something high in fat, your brain gets “hit” with the fatty acids, and you become resistant to insulin and leptin.

“Since you’re not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat.”

The researchers also found that one particular type of fat — palmitic acid which is found in beef, butter, cheese and milk, — is particularly effective at instigating this mechanism.

Fat doesn’t make you eat too much.  Sugar does.  I’m eating meat and butter and eggs while limiting carbohydrates and avoiding sugar.  Since starting this, my appetite is dramatically reduced;  I’m less hungry, eating less, and staying full longer.

Explain that with your mouse study.
