National Counterterrorism Center

September 11, 2009

I did not even know that the United States has a National Counterterrorism Center.  I assumed that counterterrorism would fall under the auspices of Homeland Security and the various armed forces.  Now I remember … the NCTC is supposed to coordinate all of the other agencies.

The National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) was established by Presidential Executive Order 13354 in August 2004, and codified by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA). NCTC implements a key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission: “Breaking the older mold of national government organizations, this NCTC should be a center for joint operational planning and joint intelligence, staffed by personnel from the various agencies.”1 See Final Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, at p. 403.

Coolest thing on their website?  Interactive timeline.

Oddest?  Printable version of the Counterterrorism Daily Planner.  This planner has tons of information and I would probably purchase one if given the chance but it’s 164 pages!  Who would print that?
