Fewer pet peeves. Less annoying.

September 11, 2009

Can I just rant again about the misuse of “fewer” and “less”?

This should say “50% fewer calories” because you can COUNT calories.

Why can people not get this right?  This mistake is made on packages and on signs and in newspapers and EVERYWHERE!

It’s not difficult.  Fewer calories.  Less fat.  Fewer fat grams.  Less rain.  Fewer inches of rain.

Is this not taught in school???

It was taught in MY school, and I completely agree. This bugs the crap out of me, too. Another one that’s similar (and just as frequently misused) is “different from/ different than.” But nowadays, the more often a word is misspelled or a phrase misused, the closer we get to having yet another accepted usage. I think it’s a travesty.
