We have to raise funds for what?

March 19, 2009

Holy crap.

The province is budgeting $200 million to build a children’s hospital in Saskatoon.

So many questions.  Why do we need another hospital building?  Did you know that wards in City Hospital are currently being used for offices?  The children’s hospital is supposed to go next to Royal University Hospital.  Where?  On the river?  On the university president’s lawn?

And what do you get for $200 million?  A building.

And who gets to fill the building?  That’s the kicker.

The Saskatoon Health Region, which will require another $50 million to buy furnishings and equipment, will be turning to the Children’s Health and Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan for funds.

ORLY.

I thought that we had publicly funded universal healthcare in Canada.  Not so much.  The health region expects all of the residents of Saskatoon to contribute.

I think that we do already contribute.  We pay taxes.  Taxes.  Lots of taxes.

I am completely unmotivated to participate in raising funds or donating funds to purchase medical equipment.  Maybe the health region could reduce the size of the bureaucracy and use that money to furnish the new hospital.  Just a suggestion.
